Northern Lights Tours

Exclusiv polar winter expeditions

Dates on request

The feeling of sailing under dancing Northern Lights with just the sound of wind and waves around you (and probably a breath or two of whales) is very difficult to describe. Such an experience stays in your heart where there are no words.

The North of Norway is the epicentre for the famous Aurora Borealis and we will sail straight into the middle of this for having the most remarkable sail tour there is in Arctic winter. One-way either from Tromsø to Lyngseidet just South of the Lyngen Peninsula or vice-versa we will visit lightpollution free anchorages, Jøkelbreen – the only glacier in mainland Europe which still goes down to the sea, historical fishing settlements and we will try very hard to make out where the schools of hering and thus the whales have entered the fjords to pay them a visit, too. If there is anything topping to sail under dancing Northern Lights it might be to sail under dancing Northern Lights with whales alongside our boat…

And because this is to be the most remarkable sail tour there is in Arctic winter we will sail on board our sturdy but still cosy 70′ expedition yacht “Valiente” with enough space and privacy to make you feel at home and sufficient power to charge all your gadgets. On board “Valiente” everybody will find ideal spots to rest and tune in to pure and honest nature while Skipper Jan with over 12 years of local knowledge and his dedicated crew will make sure you are safe, well fed and completely comfortable throughout your time on board.

While on board you are very welcome to participate on all activities on board – be it sailing, mooring or cooking. Our experienced crew will be more than happy to show you around. If you don’t feel like it – fine!

Itinerary

This program may change according to weather and sea conditions, and to where the whales are of course, but it gives an indication of how we spend the days. We’ll try our best to let you experience all that the Arctic has to offer!

Tromsø to Lyngseidet:

Wednesday – Welcome on board and set sail bound Skjervøy!
We meet in the harbor of Tromsø at 15:00. We will get to know each other and the boat. The crew will talk you through the equipment and safety routines onboard, and we will go through the program for the week. We aim to leave Tromsø that evening making way through Grøtsundet and have a beautiful view of the Lyngen Alps – bound Skjervøy. We spend quite a fraction of the night underway hoping to start the trip with some Northern Lights!

Thursday – Set sail towards the whales and a glacier
After an exciting night where you hopefully also catched some sound sleep like a baby in its cradle we have an easy start and set sail after a good breakfast. We approach the spawning grounds of the herring and may see our first whales! Later that day we will sail into Jøkelfjorden to see the last European glacier which reaches down to the sea and where we also spend the night. No manmade light to see…

Friday – Northern Lights, Whales,Lyngen Alps and a historical fishing settlement
This is the day where you will sail through the Alps. This part of Norway offers spectacular fjords, sounds and mountains where your eyes will never be satisfied and want to see more – more – more of this. After a good day of alpine sailing with likely more whale contacts we will make fast on the pier of the famous Hamnes Handlested on Uløya.

Saturday – Head into Lyngseidet
The Snow in this area will make the Arctic night glow in a mystic bluish light. During the day further into Lyngenfjord we will find remote anchorages and probably the chance to step on shore in a wild bay. Later of that successful day we head into the small town Lyngseidet, to stretch our sea legs and perhaps have a well-deserved drink!

Sunday – Time to say goodbye
Unfortunately this is the morning when your bag has to be packed and you are ready to disembark. You will leave “Valiente” with your heart full of uncomparable memories and some new friends. Savour this feeling!

Lyngseidet to Tromsø:

We aim to leave Lyngseidet that evening making way North through the Lyngenfjord and have a beautiful view of the Lyngen Alps – bound the famous Hamnes Handlested on Uløya. This part of Norway offers spectacular fjords, sounds and mountains where your eyes will never be satisfied and want to see more – more – more of this. After a good day of alpine sailing with likely more whale contacts we will anchor up in the remote bay Akkarvik on Arnøya. If the sky is clear it is very likely to see more Northern Lights this night.

Saturday – Head into Tromsø
A nice day out sailing! While crossing over to Grøtsundet we will have more scenic views of the Lyngen Peninsula. This time the West face. Unreal how these mountains just grow hundreds of meters out of the sea. Later of that successful day we moor up in Tromsø – this thriving Paris of the North, to stretch our sea legs and perhaps hit the town and have a well-deserved drink!

Sunday – Time to say goodbye
Unfortunately this is the morning when your bag has to be packed and you are ready to disembark. You will leave “Valiente” with your heart full of uncomparable memories and some new friends. Savour this feeling!
